Day 9: Being Happy Can Only Happen Now

The energy cycles that we are experiencing are not limited to the nature’s seasons. We can have days or weeks when we need to give ourselves the time to re-center. This doesn’t mean doing nothing, but doing things that bring us joy. I used to think that putting my head on the pillow at night and thinking of what I achieved was enough, but I’ve added the thought of ‘What did I enjoy doing today?’ as an equally important success measure for the day.

I haven’t mentioned 4AM in my posts lately because I am far from succeeding at this challenge. But taking on this responsibility helped me identify things that I need to improve on my day to day life. This includes introducing joyful activities as a must on my schedule. What can you do today to be happy?

Day 8: No Technology Day

My 4AM challenge has fallen apart, but what I am trying to learn day on day is how to use my time more effectively. Something that helped me yesterday was doing a technology detox. I haven’t been on my phone or laptop yesterday for a good 12 hours and here are some of the things that I’ve noticed:

  • I felt like I have time
  • I had more energy to be active
  • I enjoyed my time more
  • I got to do things that I wouldn’t normally do (repotting plants, get on top of cleaning, read a new book)

Overall, limiting tech access for the bulk of the day helped me rediscover the things that I love doing. I will definitely incorporate no tech hours within my daily activities and push myself to use my laptop and phone only when it is absolutely necessary.

Day 7: Taking One Day at a Time

Yes, every day is special. But we all have time cycles, that can vary in length, when we lack energy. And although there is enough information out there for us to know that it all starts with changing the way we use our body, exercise, posture etc it’s okay to take time and recover.

Are there any do’s and don’t’s? What might be helpful to elevate you from a low mood, energy lacking state is to surround yourself with stimuli that will help get you there. For instance, reading a book that can help you with processing your emotions, meditating, journaling, are all useful methods to get you out of the slump.

Day 6: Living from a Higher Place

Have you ever walked about in the dark and ran into things? The same thing happens when we are upset and we interact with other people. Being upset or hurt clouds our perspective and makes our words and actions land the same way – causing upset.

A higher place means, a place where you feel calm. You don’t need to be a cheerful bunny to allow yourself to interact with others, but a state of calm will allow you to be more aware to different triggers that might bring you down.

Day 5: Know Where to Go for Help

Someone once told me that whatever the issue, there is a book somewhere that addresses it. And, as obvious as it may sound, that to me was new.

I’ll be honest and say that at this point I’ve failed more than I’ve succeeded at walking up at 4AM. The positive is that I’ve been able to keep this part of the commitment – writing daily with a 5.30AM delivery time. This means that I need a better strategy for my 4AM endeavours. Postponing so often the 4AM to 5AM means that I’ve been reinforcing this type of behaviour in the past 4 days. I have some readings lined up for today, one of which is the ‘Awaken the Giant Within’ book. I won’t be reading it cover to cover, but focus on some exercises that will help me overcome this challenge.

If you have any books that have been helping you when you got stuck, I’d be happy to learn about it.

Day 4: Adjusting

Something that I’ve learnt in the past few days is that the 5.30AM deadline is working, but waking up at 4AM is a bit hit and miss. For the next 5 days I will give myself time to adjust my daily routines, mainly the evening one, without which the morning can easily fall apart.

It’s important to maintain focus but at the same time to understand that a goal is supported by different moving pieces. Getting the day on a healthy path is my new objective that will feed into the 4AM wake-up. Wish me strength and if you have any suggestions please let me know 🙂
