Focus Means Saying No to Cool Ideas

It was more than once that I was called an idiot which at a very young age was described to me as ‘a person with ideas’. It didn’t take long to understand that ideas are worth something, so I would explore every corner of my creativity trying to impress my audience. Only later to understand that ideas that are not implemented are mere entertainment.

Focus and creativity can make a great pair, but creativity needs discipline. To complete any piece of work we need focus. We need to take out our notebook and write down our ideas. Picture a child chasing a butterfly until a more flashy, beautifully painted one comes along. Chances are that the first butterfly that was chased is at a considerable distance by the time the child realizes the distraction.

Eliminating distractions can be painful in the beginning, which is why seeing our life through the eyes of our future-self numbs the pain and allows us to accumulate uplifting decisions and actions that will bring change and rewards. Become now who you want to be tomorrow.

Yesterday. No Longer You

Change happens in an instant, what takes time is the process leading to it. And even though we might not know it, internal processes are always in action, shifting our behaviors gradually, in line with our beliefs.

Here’s the irony: who you were is not who you are. Every day starts with a new challenge that shapes a part of you. The decisions on how to react, if we settle acting within our limitations or if we choose to educate ourselves and grow, the decision of being a better person or not, they all account for who we are, in the present moment.

You are shaping today and everyday who you are going to become and becoming never stops.

Time to Reflect on How We Do Things

You might have noticed the lack of a daily post yesterday. I took a step back to rethink the structure of the blog and the way you get your daily dose of self-growth and life learning, if you will, from this space.

After some thought on how to maximise the value that this blog brings, my proposal to you is to share one-paragraph food for thought type of post every day, sometimes raw, undigested ideas, that might bring a different perspective into your life.

We’ll start the new regiment tomorrow, on a Friday, because Friday is just as good of a day as any other day of the week. To balance out the brief content I’ll put my energy and focus on one detailed, well-documented blog piece a week which will be addressing topics that have proven to be of interest over the past six months.

Stressed and Confused? Only You Can Change That

Does the influx of unwanted information start to take over your life? Are you trapped between worry, stress and uncertainty? Stop. Take a deep breath. Clear your thoughts. We are all faced with a choice.

As comfortable as the victim mindset makes us feel, it’s detrimental to our wellbeing. So then what can we do? If we’d see the wave coming we most likely won’t run towards it. Similarly, facing the avalanche of bad news and misinformation, what makes us think that being swamped by negativity will have the opposite effect: positivity, regeneration and growth?

To regain calm we need to anchor ourselves into a reality that we can work towards. We can envision health and prosperity and even if these ideas are being challenged at the moment, what projecting misery achieves is only making room for misery.

We may not be able to change the world around us, but we can change the world we build and we project. Let’s make the world shine with the beauty of our thoughts and the strength of our emotions.

‘You Won’t Be the Same Person One Year from Now’

That’s what I was told when I started a new job. And it’s true, I wasn’t the same person one year from then. Was it due to the role? Maybe 10%, yes. But being in that place as part of my journey played a great part in what I wanted to outgrow – my limited beliefs, the power that I allow people to have on me and daring to want more and ask for it.

We hear of people traveling who are hoping that the experience will change them. Instead, they take their biases, views and assumption everywhere they go. A luggage costing them their own development. A place or a story can only touch us if we allow it. We tend to count more on other people’s views and discount the learning from simple things – people watching or observing different cultures.

What I’ve learnt is that growing is important, but the direction of growth adds more value to our life and to what we have to offer. Knowing that you won’t be the same person one year from now, tell me, what direction are you planning on growing in?

Lift Your Mood Up By Simply Trying to Be Happy

Grogginess, grumpiness – not enough coffee, not enough sleep – they’re all situations and states of being you can control. Even rudeness is curable. All it takes is putting yourself in the shoes of the people you interact with the most and ask yourself – would I want to be around myself?

Do I bring joy to others? Do I bring joy in my life just through positive thinking and having an uplifting attitude?

It might sometimes be challenging to admit that your emotions are within your control, but ultimately accepting the reality allow us to change it. How do you want to live your life? Do you want to age with kindness or with an upside down smile? Do you want to be surrounded by people who have wrinkles because of the anger or because of the laughter? Whatever we choose, change begins with ourselves.
