Living Intentionally

Accidents happen all the time, but what if we choose to live our life in accident mode? We wake up dreading the day ahead of us and looking forward for the escape of sleep, just to realize that the lack of awareness while sleeping makes those intensely sought for moments insignificant. And we carry on looking for some real experiences when our most cherished present is the present moment.

The routines we build and do mindfully or mindlessly create the map for our life. It doesn’t take a fortune teller to anticipate what our life will be 10 years from now. Our life unfolds the way we see it in our mind and what we see in our mind is reflected through how we live our life. It can take extraordinary effort to love ourselves and start developing positive self-talk and beliefs of achievement that will help us overcome our condition.

Leaving our life to chance is a losing bet. It allows producers, employers, family and friends to feed off our backs, of our energy. Let’s use our creative energy to become our highest version of ourselves and go full speed in changing what we see and what we do to improve the world around us.

How Are You Modelling Your Future?

The array of objects that we surround ourselves with every day is likely higher than the number of people we’ve met throughout our entire life. As extreme as it might sound, each of us will meet on average 80,000 people throughout our entire life and as it goes for the items that we own, an average American household has around 300,000 items.

It’s easy to get anchored into the material reality and care more about the immediate dopamine spike given by a new purchase than the long term rewards, but scrolling through shopping websites leaves less time for introspection and reflection to identify those long-term goals. Shopping, replacing items and redecorating are all activities that give the illusion of achievement. The results that we see now have been seeded months or years ago. Same goes for a lack of success. A lack of success can either indicate that we are on our way to create it or that we are walking on infertile soil. How do you fertilize your life to let yourself bloom?

Decluttering Our Mind

There are many thoughts that don’t serve us, from persistent memories that we seek to understand, to possibilities of what the future might unveil. How can we turn the past and future into positive? Through learning from past experiences and visualizing the future. This allows us to hold on to the strands of thinking that play a greater role in shaping our future.

Similarly to a clean, white floor, a clear mind gives us a sense of calm. Being in the now helps us get a sense of direction – where we are coming from and where we are going to. By choose these two coordinates we are reframing our memories and wants and needs of the future. It’s time to strip down our mind of clutter and keep only the essentials.

Where Should We Be on the Path to Success?

Time can easily go unaccounted for, but we all have dreams. The most important question when pursuing our dreams is looking at where we are versus what we should be doing. Time unaccounted for is time that hasn’t been maximised to grow the skills we need that will help us in the long run.

Thinking small will keep us small. If we can uncover the big dreams and expectations we had from life and from ourselves from a very early stage, we can use discipline to get there. We need a purpose in life, may it be a housework project, career or personal development, we need to know where we want to reach. The road will always be unknown, but ensuring that we are on the right track will bring familiarity into our journey. Success feels familiar when we’ve projected it in advance.

Say No to Distractions

Having set a goal, it’s time to clear the road ahead and focus on progress. How do you set a goal? It’s not an exact science. It takes introspection and a desire to face your dreams and failures to find a way to move towards success. Distractions play a great part in weather or not we will make progress. When we think of distractions, the internet may be the first thing that pops into your mind. And that’s certainly a key player, but we don’t often consider:

  • the news
  • unnecessary phone calls
  • shopping and wasting time on making decisions that have little impact in the long run
  • chit-chat, gossip and criticism towards others

A distraction is anything that will take you off the road that leads to your goal. More than willpower, we need better planning to succeed. Plan to avoid situations where distractions might occur and set the expectations low from those close to you when it comes to social activities. It doesn’t all have to be about sacrificing a good time for a productive time. Limiting distractions will not only help your progress, but turn a good time into a memorable time.

What’s Your Goal for the Weekend?

Ready to breath the relief of the weekend? It took me a while to realize that I get as much of the weekend as I am awake and productive. If we think of the weekend as a recharge and energize experience for the week ahead, we are limiting our growth. Working Monday to Friday in a sometimes repetitive role handicaps us, shatters our dreams and reinforces limitations. But applying discipline over the weekend to achieve whatever it is we set our mind to might actually make us feel more lively and in charge of our own lives than any amounts of sleep and lazing around.

What we need is what we tell ourselves that we need. If we think we need comfort food when things are not working out or 48 hours to ‘recharge’ by doing nothing, we will waste years of hour lives. Living is personal to each one of us, unless we adhere to codes that inhibit our growth and make us settle for less. These social constructs make us act the same way as the majority and unless there is a bored to death and wait for things to happen competition, chances are we are nowhere near succeeding at building a life of our own.
