Maintaining the Discipline to Grow

Formal education tricks us into thinking that knowledge can be solidified in three years, with no further maintenance. If we take this approach to any practices that improve our wellbeing – meditation, mindfulness, affirmations etc we can’t be further away from the truth. Often times, as soon as we stop exercising or meditating for instance, our body and mind is changing its composition. The lack of commitment and self-esteem take center stage and we allow all the hard work to go to waste. We are embarked on an ongoing journey towards growth and not seeking to meet our full potential is choosing to just partially live. Buckle up, take responsibility and commit to building purpose.

Taking Responsibility

That time you walked into a door, you said the wrong thing, you’ve been absent and worried instead of present and aware. All that is your responsibility. Things can happen, but the way they happen to you is different from how they happen to anyone else. And all this is how your process and perceive what is happening around you and how you choose to respond. Taking responsibility is the first step into the right direction.

How Decisions Dictate Our Actions

If we decide to be successful or come up with a plan and don’t implement it, we can be tricked into thinking that decisions and actions have little to do with each other. However, making the decision of planning and the decision of implementing the plan are two different things. They are both actions, which is a positive, but plans are probably only useful in jobs where we are in for the hours and the ‘free time’ weekend reward – meaning, we couldn’t care less.

Not caring is not something that we can switch on and off as we please. Not at first. If we are in the mindset of making tasks appear like that they’ve been dealt with, postponing deadlines and dragging our feet around, that’s a setback that requires a huge shift. If you are an entrepreneur ‘after hours’ and are still in a job to support you while you are taking your business of the ground, you’d be impressed to hear that you have the ability to deliver high quality of work throughout the entire day.

You have the power to change into a person that gets things done without being conditioned by the threat of a deadline or rewards. That’s an attitude that we need to take into each area of our life – finances, relationships, health. Decide to care at every single level and you will experience impressive growth. You will master the power of decision.

Taking Responsibility for Our Life

Taking responsibility and ‘taking the blame’ are two different things. Responsibility requires action, a response to circumstances that facilitates growth. Blame is passive. As much as certain people think that they benefit from it by maintaining their public image, blame doesn’t serve anyone. Blame hinders the self-esteem, while responsibility builds integrity and a feeling of self-worth.

How does this apply to how we approach life? Responsibility plays a great role in our perception over the world and we need to discipline our mind to be able to use its power. It really means that victimisation is not an option and that dreadful feeling of failure gets spun into success by avoiding blame and focusing on the solution.

This is a superpower that can turn our life from a passive experience into a dynamic search of solutions. The great thing about it is that taking responsibility is a choice that you and I can make to help ourselves stay focused and in control of our life.
