Have you ever dreamed of walking up, getting ready in 30 minutes, entering an audience of 1,000 people and delivering a candid, funny, yet meaningful speech? With some people fearing public speaking more than they fear death, it’s so much more important to consider exercise and preparation ahead of every task, big or small – but more importantly if there’s something that we’ve never done before. The first step is, in this example, to practice not just the speech, but the delivery, the room, reactions, joy and fulfillment beforehand through the power of imagination. Our brain doesn’t know the difference between reality and the product of our imagination, which is why worrying scenarios feel so real. So do yourself a favor and put yourself in positive situations by starting with what’s happening inside your mind.
There are many thoughts that don’t serve us, from persistent memories that we seek to understand, to possibilities of what the future might unveil. How can we turn the past and future into positive? Through learning from past experiences and visualizing the future. This allows us to hold on to the strands of thinking that play a greater role in shaping our future.
Similarly to a clean, white floor, a clear mind gives us a sense of calm. Being in the now helps us get a sense of direction – where we are coming from and where we are going to. By choose these two coordinates we are reframing our memories and wants and needs of the future. It’s time to strip down our mind of clutter and keep only the essentials.
In times of austerity we cannot postpone change and choosing what’s right. What’s easy is no longer an option and giving into anger and despair is guaranteed failure.
So what can we do when we can’t change the decisions that led us here?
- Take a look at your environment. Tidy up the space for a clear mind.
- What is your ‘must’ through this challenging period? Financially, socially (the need to connect with people) and personally (self-growth).
- Where do you want to go?
Envisioning a bright future when the world seems to be on verge of collapsing might not be the most sensitive thing to do, but it certainly is the healthiest. We attract what we say and what we think and despite all the chaos, there is still room for our individual narrative.
We all deal with uncertainty differently, but we all find it difficult. Indulging in fear and anxiety invites uncertainty. As challenging as it is, we would benefit greatly from using our imagination and inner talk in a positive way.
Mental scenarios of health can take a lot of focus. How can we imagine a reality where the immediate crisis is unknown? We start with our hopes and prayers. For a long time I doubted prayers, but I now come to understand that prayers are not favors asked, but affirmations.
Take a deep breath. A world awaits to be shaped and everything starts with calm.
We are sometimes faced with decisions that can impact not only our wellbeing, but the wellbeing of the people around us. We might be making just as many decisions as before, but now we are dragged into the now and forced to project over the infinite of possibilities.
Responsible decision making is one side of the story, whilst worry is the hidden part that doesn’t serve anyone. For days now I am forcing myself to cultivate positive practices of visualization and affirmations. We generate thoughts that feed into a greater narrative, we might as well make them representative of our wants, rather than our fears.
An ethical decision might be not to give into fear. Looking after a loved one. Inspiring people to find humanity in chaos. We have great power within that transcends from the immaterial world into the physical world. Lets make the immaterial a copy of the reality that we envision and increase our chances for our physical world to transform into what we imagined.
Guilt can prevent us from making decisions that we’re not confident with 100%. Unlike doubt, if used ahead of making a decision, it can be a great tool to anticipate the internal changes that making a choice would bring.
Rather than waiting for retrospective guilt to kick in, let’s do a visualization exercise of what awaits for us on the other side of making a decision. Is it a life of joy or a life of struggle? Is it financial comfort but emotional torture? Is it financial comfort and emotional wellbeing?
We can work towards achieving everything we want in life. Yes, it’s true that everything comes at a cost, but living a full life takes time and effort. Guilt doesn’t have to be our companion. We can welcome it in and acknowledge the early signs of being off course. Let’s try and understand the signs – are they our parents’ bias, cultural limitations or is it truly us, moving away from who we want to become?
